What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks' worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site, and it can also search all of the sites that we link to.

USA: New York, 17-22 June
Association of Anglican Musicians 2001 Conference
'AAM 2001 will explore the homiletical implications of music performed in the context of worship. As we experience the variety of liturgical and musical expression that New York City offers, conferees are invited to study and reflect upon the ways in which music performed within the context of worship proclaims the Gospel and comments upon it.This year’s theme: Music as Preaching and Prophecy: Proclaiming the Gospel in Song arises out of the assumption that when a sacred text is sung liturgically—or even when purely instrumental music is played—the experience articulates and interprets the biblical and theological content of the composition being performed. Therefore, as musicians, whenever we perform music in a liturgical context, we function as preachers'. -- http://www.aam2001.com

Canada: PEI, 25-28 June
Atlantic Theological Conference 2001: The Journey Home: Sin and Grace. -- http://www.stpeter.org/conf.htm

News Centre
Britain too busy burying cows and sheep to generate any news, except about national elections, which we shan't report. Archbishop of York, in an admirable attempt to be newsworthy, makes the front page. Gustav Niebuhr reports on church unity, as do many columnists, though some are opining against it. Three new bishops elected; entirely too many ballots cast. +Rochester on women as bishops. English priest says divorce is child abuse. Jeremy Rifkin on the ethics of cloning. Ghost found not to be a ghost. Anglican-Lutheran working group reports out. Forensic scientist reconstructs "face of Jesus"; nearly everyone has something to say about it. South African bishops ask you to read the whole article and not just the first paragraph. All this, and more, in the News Centre.

Worth Noting
The William Blake show now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, was in London this winter as an enormous exhibition— ˜more than 600 works˜—about which British newspapers and magazines spilled gallons of ink for months. The British are besotted by Blake (1757-1827), after generations of neglect. His "Jerusalem" is like a national anthem. -- http://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/30/arts/30KIMM.html

Episcopal elections

At nomination stage
The Diocese of Central New York has announced the candidates for its tenth bishop. Election: 1-2 June -- http://centralnewyork.anglican.org/tenthbishop/nominees/

The Diocese of Atlanta announced candidate information for its ninth bishop a few weeks ago. Election: 31 March -- http://atlanta.anglican.org (The Atlanta webmaster notes: 'Over the past several weeks the diocese has gotten acquainted with these 5 through the internet. Each week, members of the diocese could submit questions to candidates around five topics: experience in ministry, community building / leadership, spiritual practice, social justice/community ministry, and liturgy. Members of the nominating committee then distilled these questions into three "coffee hour questions" to be answered in 300 words or less each. In addition, emails were sent regularly to members of the diocese, informing them of the nominating committee's progress. Each of these avenues of communication got much good feedback, many web hits, and helped the diocese get better acquainted with its candidates prior to the "live" presentation events'.)

The Diocese of West Tennessee posted information on the web some time ago about the candidates for its third bishop. Election: 29 March. -- http://westtennessee.anglican.org
