What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site and also many important official Anglican sites worldwide.

If you would like your website listed here, please use this form to tell us about it.

A History of Preaching, by O. C. Edwards Jr, is reviewed in the Church Times by the Very Revd Dr David L. Edwards. 'THE LORD gave the Word, but the variety of its preachers is almost incredible.' 'A CD-ROM is attached to a finely printed book, providing specimen sermons from the past.'

The Politics of Human Frailty: A Theological Defence of Political Liberalism, by Christopher J. Insole is reviewed with Roger Ruston's Human Rights and the Image of God in the Church Times by Duncan Forrester who says the gist of these two books is that 'there is a strong affinity between Christianity, particularly Anglicanism, and modern political liberalism.'

Thomas Tomkins: The last Elizabethan, by Anthony Boden, is reviewed in the Church Times by Roderic Dunnett. 'Thomas Tompkins (1572-1656) was one of music's great survivors. Organist of both Worcester Cathedral and of the Chapel Royal, he was born not long before the death of Tallis, and lived until just before the birth of Purcell, through the Elizabethan, Jacobean, Civil War, and Commonwealth periods.' This book 'is a beautifully produced and sympathetic book, chock-full of fascinating material, shrewd analysis, and intriguing surmise. The layout is superb, with beautifully reproduced illustrations.'

Advent Resources
A devotion for the last days of Advent from Full Homely Divinity. 'We offer here another way of using the Great O’s. One may use as much or as little of this devotion as is appropriate. It could be used at any time of day, but the beginning or the end of a meal is suggested. The simplest use would be to say the antiphon, or to sing the verse of the hymn. Then, say the Lord’s Prayer and conclude the devotion with a prayer appropriate for the season. If the devotion is used before a meal, the usual mealtime grace would be said in place of, or in addition to, the seasonal prayer.'

Church History
An Exposition of the Creed, by John Pearson (1877 edition by E. Burton). This work in progress makes this important classic of Anglican divinity available in Adobe Acrobat format. The first four articles are available, and they print clearly on 8.5" x 11" paper for reading with full Greek text and footnotes, as well as other formatting from the original. Pearson (1613-1686) was Bishop of Chester; his Exposition of the Creed was first published in 1659.

The Relations between Religion and Science, by Frederick Temple (Bampton Lectures, 1884). Temple (1821-1902) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1897-1902. In these eight lectures, he examines the philosophical relationship between religion and science, taking into account the intellectual contributions of Paley, Butler and Darwin.

"A Selection of Fundamentals": The Intellectual Background of the Melanesian Mission of the Church of England, 1850-1914, by Sara Harrison Sohmer (University of Hawai'i doctoral dissertation, 1998). This fascinating intellectual history of an important Anglican missionary sphere examines evangelicalism, intellectual liberalism, imperialism and the Oxford Movement in a very worthwhile interdisciplinary study.

Not in the Communion
Ecumenical Anglican Catholic Church: 'The Ecumenical Anglican Catholic Church is non-discriminatory, non-political, and non-restrictive. We believe in a traditional Anglican form of worship supporting the finest in Catholic heritage, liturgy, and ritual. The unquestionable validity of our apostolic succession comes from Africa, England, Rome, and Russia. We are born out of a sense of escaping the ecclesiastic hypocrisy and human bigotry of men in positions of authority within the church. We refute the "alphabet soup" confusion of Anglicanism.'

Religious Orders
The Order of Mission: Sheffield, England. Established in 2003 by the Archbishop of York. Members of the Order are working in partnership with a variety of churches and denominations around the world, to raise up, equip and support missional leaders who will pioneer new expressions of church for our day and in our cultures.
