What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site and also many important official Anglican sites worldwide. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

Church History
Letters, Documents, &c. in the Matter of Episcopal Jurisdiction in China (c. 1904). This extensive page provides documentation on disputes about missionary episcopal jurisdiction in China during the nineteenth century. Ranging over a period of 25 years, the correspondence among committees, archbishops and bishops reveals a somewhat difficult period in local relations between the Church of England and the Episcopal Church USA.

LLiturgical Spirituality under the Southern Cross: A Study of the Impact of the Anglo-Catholic Tradition on the Anglican Church in Melanesia, by David V. Vunagi (1998). In this M.Th. thesis, David Vunagi (now Bishop of Temotu in the Church of Melanesia) explores the liturgical impact of early Anglo-Catholic missionaries in Melanesia, as well as the potential for liturgical inculturation in the future.

Memorial of the Rev. Wm. Chauncy Langdon, on the Subject of the Italian Reform Movement (1865). This brief memorial by W.C. Landgon (1831-1895) to the General Convention of 1865 encourages the Episcopal Church USA to fund protestantizing elements in the Roman Catholic Church on the Italian peninsula.

Miscellaneous resources
The Prayer Book Society in Australia (New South Wales Branch): This Sydney-based organisation encourages the use of the Book of Common Prayer (1662) through seminars, publications and events.

Book Reviews
The King's Reformation: Henry VIII and the remaking of the English Church, by G. W. Bernard, reviewed by Emma Watson in the Church Times. Was Henry VIII the lone instigator of religion change in England in the 1530s and 1540s? Bernard maintains he was, a thesis contrary to accepted understandings. King Henry's Reformation sounds like an interesting read, especially for those prone to the 'great men make history' approach to history
.

Public Life and the Place of the Church: Reflections to honour the Bishop of Oxford, edited by Michael Brierley is reviewed in the Church Times by Michael Northcott. 'Very readable' and 'fascinating' are rarely found in review of a Festschrift.

Edward Dowler reviews Apocalypse Now? Reflections of Faith in a Time of Terror, by Duncan Forrester, with Things Shaken - Things Unshaken: Reflections on Faith and Terror, by Colin Morrise, also in the Church Times. 'Both books, in different ways, give the sense of being works in progress; provisional position statements rather than finished analyses. To some extent, this is precisely what is needed in a rapidly changing situation. Everything is moving so fast that there isn't really time for measured or full responses.'

Generation: Young Canadian Anglicans: A Canadian national website for Anglican youth.

Church History
The Change at the Resurrection, by Benjamin T. Onderdonk (1840). This sermon was preached at the funeral of Peter Williams, the second African American priest ordained in the Episcopal Church USA. Williams figures significantly in Craig Townsend’s worthwhile Faith in Their Own Color: Black Episcopalians in Antebellum New York (Columbia University Press, 2005).

Early Days of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Texas, by DuBose Murphy. This detailed article from Southwestern Historical Quarterly Online charts the history of Anglicanism in Texas from 1838 to 1850.

A Sermon delivered at the Consecration of William Meade, by William White (1829). Bishop White draws on more than forty years of experience in the episcopate in his sermon at the consecration of William Meade (1789-1862). There was some controversy, not about the man, but about the terms of his election; Meade would go on to serve for thirteen years as Assistant Bishop and another twenty as Bishop of Virginia.

Worth Noting
Faithful Cities: This important report from the Methodist Church of Great Britain and the Church of England, released on 22 May 2006, urges a new invigoration of the churches' roles in urban communities. 'Faithful Cities is about the places we live and the way our lives are changing. Thinking about cities, towns and other urban communities has involved us in thinking about citizenship, about politics and the challenges God’s open future poses us as disciples. Getting urban policy right is of interest to all communities in our predominantly urban society.' Reuters has already commented, and so has the BBC.
