What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site and also many important official Anglican sites worldwide. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed here, please use this form to tell us about it.

Book Reviews
Natural Theology, by William Paley, edited by Matthew Eddy and David Knight, is reviewed in the Church Times by John Habgood
. 'This is an astonishing book, made all the more accessible by some excellent modern footnotes. Its fame rests mainly on the now much ridiculed analogy of a watch and its watchmaker.' [Ed.: This might be read in conjunction with Richard Dawkin's 'The Blind Watchmaker'.]

Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality: Perspectives From the World's Religious Traditions, edited by Karen Marie Yust, Aostre N. Johnson, Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, Eugene C. Roehlkepartain, is reviewed in the Church Times by John Pridmore. The book is arranged in six broad sections. 'How do the world religions view children and adolescents? According to the different traditions, how do these young people grow spiritually? What rituals and practices are seen as nourishing their inner spiritual life? What is the relationship of spirituality to ethical action? Who is responsible for nurturing spirituality? What are the social and cultural forces that shape the spirituality of the young?'

The Religious Condition of Ireland 1770-1850, by Nigel Yates, reviewed in the Church Times by Richard English. 'The book's readership will be scholarly rather than general, but the work is full of fascinating detail, much of it culled from diligent research at local level.'

Canada
British Columbia: Ladysmith, St John the Evangelist (British Columbia)

Church History
The Athens of West Africa: International Education at Fourah Bay College, 1814-2002, by Danial J. Paracka, Jr. (2001). In this research paper presented to the Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies at Georgia State University, Professor Danial Paracka chronicles the long history and significance of Fourah Bay College, an Anglican educational institution in Sierra Leone.

The Captive Missionary, by Henry Aaron Stern (1868). Anglican priest H.A. Stern (1820-1885) recounts his imprisonment in Ethiopia from 1863 to 1868 during the course of missionary work among the Falasha Jewish community there. Stern received a D.D. from the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1881.

Report of the Missionary Bishop of Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, by G.M. Randall (1871). George Maxwell Randall (1810-1873) reports on his missionary work and journeys in this vast jurisdiction; his narrative is accompanied by three attractive engravings. The author writes of the promise of these new territories for church growth, and laments the lack of strong support from older dioceses in the eastern United States.

Exchange
Kent England > USA/Canada August 2007
I am incumbent of the Parish of St Margaret, Barming near Maidstone in Kent and am looking for an exchange on sabbatical for the month of August 2007. This Parish is evangelical in outlook. Parish Communion is at the centre of it's life, but there are free Family Worship and 'New Way' services. Attendance average 80 souls. We have a 4 bedroom house and a car could be available. Reply to Nigel McGregor, NigelMcgregor@dsl.pipex.com.
