Reviews In Books and Culture, Timothy Larsen reviews Let Her Speak for Herself: Nineteenth-Century Women Writing on Women in Genesis, edited by Marion Ann Taylor and Heather E. Weir. In the Church Times, George Pattison reviews The Old Creed and the New, by Don Cupitt, Radical Theology, by Don Cupitt, and The God Problem: Alternatives to Fundamentalism by Nigel Leaves. In the Church Times Gillian Evans reviews The Senses in Late Medieval England, by C. M. Woolgar. Senses 'is somewhat like the pattern in a Celtic illumination: dense, decorative, but essentially flat; though, in a similar way, the book is immensely enjoyable and illuminating.' John Court reviews Lazarus, Mary and Martha: A Social-Scientific and Theological Reading of John, by Philip F. Esler and Ronald A. Piper, also in the Church Times. 'Some ofthe best biblical research can be focused sharply on a re-markably small amount of text... The relevant texts on the raising of Lazarus, the anointing of Jesus’s feet by Mary, and the provision of burial spices after the crucifixion are given close scrutiny, together with the problems they raise, which have puzzled commentators.' Reviews G.K. Chesterton: Thinking Backward, Looking Forward, by Stephen R.L. Clark, is reviewed by Raymond Edwards. 'One might accuse him [Clark] of wandering beyond his subject; but it would be fairer to say that he has written the sort of book about Chesterton that Chesterton might have written himself.' A Heart in my Head: A Biography of Richard Harries, by John S. Peart-Binns, is reviewed by John Whale. A somewhat weighty biography of an interesting and important bishop who now sits in the House of Lords. Recollections of a Sussex Parson, by Edward Boys Ellman, is reviewed by Adam Ford. 'These Recollections, republished to mark the centenary of the death of the Rector of Berwick (a church well known later for its connections with Charleston and the Bloomsbury set), offer a delightful insight into 19th-century parochial life.' It sounds delightful. What I Believe, by Anthony Kenny, is reviewed by T. W. Bartel. 'Virtually all the chapters consist mainly in drastic abridgements, with only modest retouching, of work published elsewhere, much of it in the 1970s and ’80s.' Canada England Episcopal
