Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We normally do not mention on this page redesigns or remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Church History
Loyalty to the Prayer Book, by Percy Dearmer (1904). A gem. 'This Church was, in fact, in a mess. She had tried so many ways of escape! She had tried Geneva; she had tried Rome; she had essayed a mixture of the two in varying proportions, which was called Moderate; she had tried laissez faire, by which each man did what he found easy and thought nice; she had even tried (heroic and marvellous as it may seem) to establish a Cathedral type of Service in every village church. The one thing that she had never tried to do was to carry out her own laws, and to apply her own principles.'

The Bells Applet: Change Ringing on the Web. 'This applet allows you to design a bell tower with up to eight bells, and ring the bells using change ringing.' Can be used online or downloaded to your own computer.

Change Ringing (from Wikipedia). Good description of the art of change ringing from mechanics to mathematics to history and culture.

Change Ringing Resources. This wide ranging website of resources was begun in 1994 and is constantly updated.

Change Ringing in North America (North American Guilld of Change Ringers). 'The ancient art and science of change ringing is on the upswing in the USA and Canada. Change ringing is a way of ringing both large bells hung in bell towers, and handbells. In 1964 when a ring of ten bells was installed at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, there were only about five actively ringing towers in North America. Today there are more than forty.' Site includes a pamphlet answering, What is Change Ringing?

Learn 2 Ring. [UK] 'learn2ring is intended to be a recruit/beginner friendly website, as part of an up to the minute comprehensive training scheme in the art of bellringing. Whilst the training scheme has primarily been designed for use in Ringing Centres, the material can be used in any tower or training setting.'

Recordings of Change Ringing. Michael Wilby assembled a laerge collectipon of change ringing from around the UK. 'Most of the recordings are of peals and are taken from the ringing room, thus what is presented here is much as the band heard it at the time: rope noise, clapper rattle and all. While this is not necessarily the best position from which to record bells, I believe it gives an interesting - and honest - appraisal of the rings of bells in question, from the perspective of the practioners.' They are available in MP3 format.

Whitechapel Bell Foundry. 'For the past two and a half centuries, Whitechapel have been acknowledged leaders in the production of musical handbells. Handbell ringing began in England about three hundred years ago. Even in those days, the best bells were made 'at the sign of the three bells' in Whitechapel. Indeed, it can be said that the whole art of handbell ringing - making molten metal into liquid sound - was built on Whitechapel handbells.' You'll find technical handbooks, repair guides and tuning. [Cross-listed under Parish Resources as a bell foundry.]

Gravestone Preservation
. [US] 'This web site is destined to become a continual work in progress. As I compile information on a specific topic, new sub-topics arise. Nearly every subject discussed, may be further elaborated, or expanded to include more information, photographs and commentary. I truly feel there is a need for this information to be disseminated, albeit incomplete, rather then waiting for a more perfect, or more complete version to be written. I do not believe in holding or protecting trade secrets, although there is a long and notorious history of this sort of behavior regarding many trades. Those who fiercely guard information will not foster the growth or expanded knowledge in any endeavor or occupation. It is only through the open exchange of ideas that we can further the cause of preserving all of Americas historic graveyards.' The FAQ, Glossary and Educatiopn and Training sections are enough to justify a visit here.

Armento Liturgical Arts. This is a Buffalo, NY maker of Columbarium provide a wide variety of designs and highly artistic and beautiful faceplates and artistry.

Praise Hymns: Rupert Christiansen in The Telegraph (London) reflects on his selection in Once More with Feeling: A Book of Classic Hymns and Carols, which, he comments, is 'inevitably personal and partial, but I hope not wildly eccentric.
