Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We normally do not mention on this page redesigns or remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Book Reviews
All That Is: A Naturalistic Faith for the Twenty-First Century by Arthur Peacocke (Philip Clayton, editor) is reviewed by Jeremy Craddock.
[See contents and more] 'Arthur Peacocke’s last book, written when he knew he was dying. In a 50-page essay, he seeks to distil his thinking over many years; then come ten responses, of about ten pages each, by other theologians.'

Adam Ford reviews three books: The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis Collins [See contents and more], Christ of the Everyday by Jeff Astley, and The Big Questions by Jonathan Hill.
‘Collins discovered the digital elegance of DNA. Uncovering this most re-markable of all texts (which he calls the “language of God”) was, he records, “an occasion for worship”. He sees God working through evolution (theistic evolution), and is puzzled by the fashion for creation-ism in the United States.’
‘Have courage, counsels Astley; tread your own journey, be brave — do your own thing.’
Hill's 'aim is the critical pursuit of wisdom, which leads him to plunge immediately into questions raised by Early Church theology. Supported by a rich selection of paragraph-length quotations from his sources, he leads the reader clearly through the conundrums of faith, hopping easily from the third century to the 20th, and back again.

The Blackwell Companion to the Bible and Culture, edited by John F. A. Sawyer is reviewed by Richard Harries [See contents and more]. 'The influence of the Bible in the past has been incalculable, and this Companion sets out at least some of the ways in which that can be traced. John Sawyer admits that, despite its 30 substantial essays, it is highly selective, and readers will not find in it all they might hope to see discussed. Nevertheless, this is probably as comprehensive an approach as one could expect to find anywhere, and there is much of interest and use.'

Temptation and Testing by Paul Butler is reviewed by Jeremy Crossley. 'Reminding us that the Greek word for temptation can also mean testing, he explains the original significance of the word, and shows how we can respond to temptation in such a way that we grow more and more into the likeness of Jesus. And that is the aim of the whole book.'
