Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We normally do not mention on this page redesigns or remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Church History
An Account of the Question Which Has Arisen between the Bishop and the Church Missionary Society in the Diocese of Colombo, by Robert Campbell Moberly (1876). This long paper examines one of many intra-Anglican disputes in the nineteenth-century mission field. In this case the trouble was between Church Missionary Society clergy and a new bishop who favoured the use of a wooden altar cross in a Tamil congregation.

Correspondence in Connection with the Protest against the Consecration of Rev. W. J. Boone as Missionary Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in China. Also Letters Referring to the Wretched Management of the Mission (1885). This pamphlet provides extensive documentation for strenuous protests made in 1884 and 1885 against the proposed consecration of William Jones Boone Jr. as American Bishop in Shanghai. The primary grounds of the protest surrounded the bishop-elect's use of coloured stoles and his having allowed Chinese seminarians to play dice.

Through the Church Door, Verses by Louise Marshall Haynes, Pictures by Clara Atwood Fitts (1924). Twenty-six sweet illustrations accompany this collection of poems and prayers for children about Anglican Christian life.

Worth Noting
Face to Faith: Giles Fraser writes in the Guardian (London). 'Anglicanism, a house divided against itself, can't survive its civil war in one piece.'

Fauré for Today: This fine radio story from American National Public Radio comes from local station-affiliate KALW. 'Grace Cathedral in San Francisco performed Gabriel Faure's Requiem on Veterans Day, and broke with tradition, dedicating the music not just to fallen soldiers, but to all souls.'

Good Samaritan: The New York Times carries this obituary of an influential and eccentric Anglican priest. 'The Rev. Chad Varah, an outspoken, publicity-sly, sometimes cantankerous Anglican priest who started a telephone hot line for the suicidal after concluding that loneliness is the most heart-rending anguish, died Thursday in Basingstoke, England. He was 95.'

Women priests and their continuing battle: Rebecca Fowler writes in the Telegraph (London) on the 15th anniversary of the ordination of women to the priesthood in the Church of England.

Book Reviews
Cally Hammond reviews Mary for Time and Eternity: Essays on Mary and Ecumenism, edited by William McLoughlin and Jill Pinnock, with Mary: The Complete Resource, edited by Sarah Jane Boss. 'To anyone who is looking for a way to make sense of Mary, I can commend both these books as valuable and stimulating. The first is a collection of essays and addresses published by the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, covering a broad range of topics, one or two of them only tangentially relevant to Mary herself. The second book approaches its stated goal (a “complete resource”) by covering early Christian material; historical development of the cult; prayer and holy sites; Anglican perspectives on devotion to Mary; literature, art, and film.'

Jenny Francis reviews Finding your Future: The Second Time Around, by Peter Shaw, with The Gospel of Falling Down: The Beauty of Failure, in an Age of Success, by Mark Townsend. These two practical books deal differently with the concept of failure. [Using his own failures and struggles, Mark Townsend] shows ' how falling short of the high standards we set ourselves as Christians can illuminate the real treasure of God’s transforming grace, if only we let it.' Peter Shaw 'aims to help readers discover what really matters to them, to encourage and challenge them by giving them tools for analysis, so that they can understand where they have come from and where they could go in future.' Both are good books.

Stephen Wright reviews History and Hermeneutics, by Murray A. Rae, with New Testament Interpretation, by Ian Boxall. 'Murray Rae is one of the Christian scholars working to join together two disciplines that have been rent asunder over the past 400 years: theology and history. He shows how this separation has emasculated both, and has impoverished scholarly engagement with scripture.' 'an Boxall’s New Testament Interpretation belongs in the useful new SCM Studyguide series. It succeeds admirably in its aim of introducing readers at first-year undergraduate level to the disciplines involved in studying the New Testament.'

Worth Noting
In God's Name: John Micklethwait writes in The Economist (London) on the roles to be played by religion in politics during the 21st century.

Out of Fashion: Robin Courtney writes in The Living Church (Milwaukee) on Jesus' last words. 'I suspect the best course for our little institution within Christendom is to allow it to implode, which seems to be the course of the recent past and present. If we fall apart, then we can be reformed and changed. To put a theological spin on it, if we die, then we can be resurrected. Perhaps in such a setting our focus would be more upon the message of the gospel than the survival of an institution and power games among varying factions.'

The Turning of an Atheist. The British philosopher Antony Flew was one of the West’s most influential nonbelievers. Then came news — from conservative Christians — that he had recanted. But his change of heart may not be what it seems.
