Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We normally do not mention on this page redesigns or remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Week of 2 December 2007

Advent Resources [Note our additional and new Advent links in addition to those shown below.]

Advent Calendar: A good one.

Advent Calendar for Kids: From a homeschooling site comes a rich resource for children.

History of the Advent Calendar: To some, advent calendars may seem like either an excuse to eat chocolate or just another thing that companies can sell to us in the run-up to Christmas. However, the humble advent calendar has a long history and was in fact invented by the same people who brought us Christmas cookies and the practice of decorating Christmas trees.

Love Blooms Bright: An Advent blog from the Scottish Episcopal Church. [2007-2008] 'This blog 'begins' on 2 December 2007. There will be daily posts throughout Advent including poems, quotations, reflections and photographs. Contributors include Episcopal clergy and lay people from around Scotland.'

St Nicholas: Discovering the truth about Santa Claus: Even if you've seen it again, it's worth visiting again.

Praising the Names of Jesus: The Antiphons of Advent.

The Daily Service can be heard on R4 LW at 09:45 every weekday during Advent on BBC radio.

The 'O' Antiphons. You can open the Antiphons in your browser or download a PDF file.

Book Reviews
Rebuilding Jerusalem: The Church’s Hold on Hearts and Minds, by Stephen Platten, is reviewed by Matthew Grimley.
[Ed: This sounds like a great book.] 'It is old-fashioned because it is the sort of book Anglican bishops used to write in the 1920s and 1930s, but seldom have the time (and, some might add, the intellectual firepower) to write today... Second, it is old-fashioned in its ambitious chronological and inter-disciplinary scope. Third, and most importantly, it is old-fashioned because it is a lament for the fragmentation of culture and the marginalisation of Christianity... A book this wide in scope (and short in length) cannot cover everything. The author is to be congratulated for setting some lively hares racing. Those of us who are academic specialists — whether, historians, sociologists, or theologians — will need to chase them further. But it is unlikely that we will write as gracefully or enjoyably as Stephen Platten does.'

A Secular Age, Charles Taylor, is reviewed by Mark Vernon. 'The dominant feature of the Western secular age is radical pluralism... For someone who would delight in an 800-page mix of crystal-clear history, philosophy, sociology, and theology, which rewards with sparkling ideas, insights, and reflections on every page, it would be a perfect present. Philosophers would say that this is a phenomenology of a secular age. That is to say, you can feel the condition it describes on the page.'

Why Christianity Happened: A Sociohistorical Account of Christian Origins (26-50 CE), by James G. Crossley, is reviewed by John Court. 'Socioeconomic conditions and urbanisation in Galilee in the 20s account for the emergence of the Jesus movement, the interpretation of the Law with a bias to the poor, and an aggressive attitude towards the rich... Readers of Church Times may not find congenial Crossley’s advocacy of a shift from exegesis to macrosociology in the historical approach to Christian origins.'

Worth Noting
Funnier Than Thou: 'There are a lot of atheists who think that if only we laugh at religion enough it will go away. But what may just as well happen is that it will learn to laugh at itself, and, when it does, it will be impossible to eradicate.' Andrew Brown writes in Comment is free on kitschmas.

Love Blooms Bright: 'The contributors [for this Advent-themed weblog] will be drawn mostly from among the clergy and laity of the Scottish Episcopal Church. But hopefully there will be others too.'

More than Christmas: 'Advent is that time in the Christian calendar that marks the start of the Christian year by anticipating the end of history.' Martyn Percy writes in the Guardian (London).

Book Reviews
Monastic Life in Anglo-Saxon England c.600–900, by Sarah Foot, is reviewed by Paul Cavill. Foot 'writes with solid good sense about matters as diverse as sexuality, slavery, and the evidential value of hagiography, where some writers have strayed into extreme views. Perhaps the most rewarding feature of the book is that it gives a real sense of the attractions, spiritual and mundane, that monastic life might have had.' [See inside].

The Alpha Phenomenon: Theology, Praxis and Challenges for Mission and Church Today, edited by Andrew Brookes, is reviewed by Lynda Barley. 'Andrew Brookes has done us a worthwhile service in bringing together the history of Alpha, and including some theological and sociological insights into its method. His book is aimed at thinking mission planners and mission strategists.'

An Iliad: A Story of War, by Alessandro Baricco, is reviewed by Sarah Meyrick. 'Baricco cuts this by two-thirds, abandons the hexameter form, and renders the poem in prose. He replaces the single omniscient narrative voice with chapters narrated in turn by 21 characters. He has all but removed the gods. The new Iliad is also chronological, doing away with the regular flashbacks employed by Homer... At its best, the resulting book is fast-moving and action-packed. If you want a quick version, this is an undemanding introduction. But much is lost along the way.'

Various children's Bible books that may well serve as Christmas gifts are reviewed by Church Times staff parents and their children.

Worth Noting
Blake and the Bible: Christopher Rowland writes in the Guardian (London). 'Blake had no time for conservative Christianity's infatuation with the Bible as the "supreme authority" in the life of the church. Such sentiments were a symptom of false religion, which contracted out responsibility for biblical interpretation to priests and scholars.'

Drenched in Grace addresses: Thinking Anglicans has links to several addresses from this InclusiveChurch conference held over the last week.

Why Gladstone Had God up His Sleeve: 'Certainly he had a temperament that would have made him a bulldozer whatever his religious ideas. Gladstone almost seemed to invent his religion as he went along. In a way this is true of everyone, insofar as they have to internalise the teaching of Christianity according to their insights as the years go on. Gladstone took it to extremes.' Christopher Howse writes in the Daily Telegraph (London).

Book Reviews
Robert Jeffery reviews Preaching What We Practice: Proclamation and Moral Discernment, by David J. Schlafer and Timothy F. Sedgwick, with 44 Sermons to Serve the Present Age, by Angela Shier-Jones and Kimberly D. Reisman. Preaching What We Practice 'gives us samples of sermons preached in a contemporary context. It is a theologically literate book that analyses the problems of preaching today. It should be required reading for all preachers.'
Shier-Jones and Reisman have had an interesting idea. They take the themes of John Wesley’s seminal 44 Sermons, which helped to define Methodist doctrine, and have asked contemporary Methodists from around the world to produce new sermons on the same texts, [but] it is a very mixed bag, containing sermons from some blatant Evangelicals, through those with careful exposition, to contemporary sermons such as Leslie Griffiths’s brilliant polemic against bigotry.

Creation and Covenant: The Significance of Sexual Difference in the Moral Theology of Marriage, by Christopher Chenault Roberts, is reviewed by Penny Seabrook. 'The title’s strength lies in its survey of the historical development of Christian thought about the significance of being male or female — which lies behind Roberts’s use of the term “sexual difference”.'

Rooted in Detachment: Living the Transfiguration, by Kenneth Stevenson, is reviewed by John Binns. 'The Gospel passages describing the transfiguration are evocative and beautiful: the event takes place on a mountain-top after a hard climb; it is full of light and beauty, and there is a message of mysterious glory... The final chapters synthesise the various themes, bringing disparate thoughts together, and showing how the different elements introduced through the discussion contribute to a coherent message.'

Miscellaneous Resources
Canterbury Hills Conference Centre: Ancaster, Ontario. Conference facility of the Diocese of Niagara. 'provides delicious home-style meals, comfortable beds, and air-conditioned meeting rooms that combine rustic charm with modern facilities for small or large groups'.
