Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We do not mention on this page remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Worth Noting
Catholic but not Necessarily Roman: Martin Marty writes on Ekklesia.co.uk about church terminology. 'Names are important, as I had to remind a friend who thought discussion of names was insignificant compared to cosmic events like "Iowa" and "New Hampshire." Wars start over pejorative and sometimes even innocently used labels.'

The Church of England's gay crisis makes clear that that liberal Anglicanism is finished, says Theo Hobson in The Guardian. How do you read this article? Its rather opaque position has sparked controversy across the spectrum of opinion in the Communion.

Nights at the Opera: The life of the man who put words to Mozart An in-depth and fascinating review by Joan Acocella in The New Yorker of the clutch of recent biographies of Mozart's greatest librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. Did you know that Da Ponte was the first professor of Italian at Columbia College in New York, then firmly an Episcopal instution? His appointment was furthered by the Reverend Clement Clarke Moore, author of Twas the Night Before Christmas, professor of Hebrew at General Theological Seminary, and son of the second bishop of New York.

Praying for Christian Unity, When Diversity Has Been the Answer: Peter Steinfels writes in the New York Times on the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. 'The battle over whether this or that Christian group’s boundaries are unjustifiably exclusive has not gone away: it is currently being fought around the issue of homosexuality. Yet this battle, too, is being fought within, not between, different Christian churches and denominations, again confirming the priority that identity has taken over unity.'

Worth Noting
Baptism allows us to share fully in the life of Jesus: Monsignor Roderick Strange writes in the Times (London). 'Christians do not believe that only those who have been baptised are loved by God. The baptised are not the charmed circle of God's beloved. Everyone is loved by God. No one is excluded. We exist because God loves us. We have been created by God's love. So why should anyone need bother to be baptised?'

One Hundred Years of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: 'In this week's All Things Considered, Roy Jenkins asks what of lasting worth has a century of praying for Christian unity produced? And what are the particular ecumenical challenges for the 21st century?' From BBC Wales.

Madeleine L'Engle 1918-2007: 'A powerful woman, large-hearted, fearless, quixotic, profoundly imaginative, unwilling to settle for mediocrity. Tall and queenly, she physically embodied her mental and spiritual attributes. I remember occasions when, in church during Advent, she would rise to full height, spread her arms wide like the Angel of the Annunciation, and declare, "Fear not!" in a tone that allowed no gainsaying. It was a challenge impossible to ignore.' This fine memorial essay appears in the current issue of Books and Culture (Chicago).
