Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We do not mention on this page remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Worth Noting
The Bishop's Daughter: Honor Moore, daughter of the late Paul Moore, sometime Bishop of New York, talks in this interview about her father. The younger Moore's book The Bishop's Daughter will be published in May 2008.

Principled or Petulant?: Libby Purves writes in the Times (London) on the refusal of some Oxford students to say grace. 'Nobody forced them to apply to a 453-year-old institution (there are other Oxford colleges) nor to accept the scholarship when it was offered. It would be brave and principled to refuse the honour and the money on grounds of atheism.'

Thou shalt not offend anyone: Giles Fraser writes in the Guardian (London) on the a BBC Easter programme. 'Without the impression that Jesus was threatening revolution, it's tough to see why the story proceeds to the cross. The kingdom of God is not just an inner glow of general benevolence. Jesus believed it to be nothing less than God's reign on earth. Which is why the story "nice guy enters Jerusalem and causes chaos" makes precious little narrative or historical sense.'

Week of 24 February 2008

Lenten Resources
A roster of resources for the forty days — and into Eastertide. Know of other good sites we should list? Let us know.

Book of Common Prayer
The Indian Liturgy (1948). 'This liturgy was originally developed in 1920 by JC Winslow, EC Ratliff, and others, and appeared as The Eucharist in India, A Plea for a Distinctive Liturgy for the Indian Church. It was sponsored by EJ Palmer, the Bishop of Bombay, and was approved for use in that Diocese with minor changes in 1923. This form thus gained the common title of "The Bombay Liturgy". The main text here is of 1948, with differences from it and the original 1923 text noted on the right.'

'A forum for the voices of our time to address contemporary issues that affect Faith and Reason.' Giles Fraser will speak on Faith, Reason and Violence.

Australia: Canberra, 27, 28, 29 August 2008: Third Australian National University Missionary History Conference
'The theme for 2008 is the history of missionary language learning, particularly in the 19th century. Participants are invited to share their knowledge of ways in which missionaries went about learning the languages of the peoples among whom they worked. Papers on mission language policy in areas such as Curriculum, Examination, Translation, Romanization, Publishing and related issues, are among the papers sought for this conference. An important strand will be identifying how individual missionaries reported their language learning experiences. This is not a conference focussed on linguistics or related issues but upon the practical issues of language learning in the Asia-Pacific region.' Direct inquiries to Dr Ian Welch, Convenor, ANU Missionary History Conference, at ian.welch@anu.edu.au.

Worth Noting
'Behind the "bonkers" headlines': Andrew Brown, writing for the Church Times, reviews the firestorm of negative publicity that derived from the Archbishop of Canterbury's comments on sharia law in the UK. It is also quite worth reading this blog entry by the same author in The Guardian (London).

Holywell - the Lourdes of Wales: 'Roy Jenkins heads for the Lourdes of Wales - St Winefride's Well at Holywell in Flintshire. Pilgrims have been trekking to this spot for thirteen centuries to seek healing, but in this secular and sceptical age, what relevance does the well have today? Why do people come and what about those who seek healing, but are not cured?' From All Things Considered, a BBC Wales programme with no relation to the American Public Radio programme of the same name.
