Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We do not mention on this page remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Worth Noting
Neither Private nor Privileged: The Role of Christianity in Britain Today: Nick Spencer writes for Fulcrum. 'The argument of this essay is that the debates should occur on the foundation of the argument from public good. The rallying cries for privatisation or privilege may stir the blood but do not reflect the subtleties and complexities of a historically-Christian but unprecedentedly plural, modern democratic state.'

Shakespeare's Grave: 'Renovators in the church where William Shakespeare's bones lie are being careful not to disturb his grave. The famous bard left a poem warning of a curse should his bones be moved from the Stratford-upon-Avon site. But people walking on his epitaph have left their mark.' Jon Kay reports in this brief BBC video.

The song from the silence: A lovely meditation from the Church Times (London) on the Feast of the Visitation. 'It is easily and often neglected. Nevertheless, it should have a special place in Christians’ hearts as marking the occasion in scripture when the Lord’s mother has the most to say for herself; for it is, above all, the festival of the Magnificat — of our Lady baring her soul.'

Staying Involved: Douglas LeBlanc writes in Episcopal Life Online (New York) on positive models of participation and belonging for conservative US Episcopalians. 'Conservatives hear frequently that our voices are an important part of the Episcopal Church. One great way to test that assertion is to speak up about what we believe. In short, we will respect our church's declarations of inclusion by being ourselves. We will trust God, in the fullness of time, to resolve those matters that divide us.'

Taking an Appreciative Path at Lambeth: Andrew Gerns of Trinity Church, Easton, Pennsylvania writes on a recent press conference in New York City. 'The conventional wisdom is wrong. At least about the Lambeth Conference.' [Editors' note: one AO editor's mother took childbirth classes in the parish hall of Trinity Church, Easton; the world is small.]

Resources
ACROSS: Anglican Crisis Relief Outreach and Support Singapore. Offers 'a Christian response to crisis due to natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, severe winters, droughts, etc.). Our response during such times is important as it is an expression of God's love for the suffering people.'

Worth Noting
Bolivian Mission Towns Revive Baroque Legacy: 'Deep in the tropics of Bolivia, a revival of centuries-old music is captivating crowds and creating the next generation of the country's classical musicians. At an international Baroque music festival this month, strains of Bach and Vivaldi are stirring in the same mission towns that the Jesuits established in the 17th century.' From American National Public Radio's Morning Edition programme.

Corpus Christi: Roderick Strange writes in the Times (London) on 'A simple supper in an upper room that feeds us still'.

St Paul's Cathedral: dome sweet dome: AA Gill, the formidable Sunday Times (London) restaurant critic and mordant essayist, visits St Paul's Cathedral for the first time and describes the experience in prose good enough to eat.

Splitting Up: Anglican Angst: Jason Byassee writes in the Christian Century (Chicago) on ecclesiastical fragmentation. 'Theologians from Augustine onward have insisted that the effort to leave one church to start a better one results not in a better church but a worse one—and it also fosters the bad habit of defection. The history of Western Christendom attests to the wisdom of this view.'
