Noted This Week

WHENEVER WE LEARN about a web site that we haven't previously listed, we'll note it here. Sometimes such sites are brand new and sometimes they have been around for a while without our having noticed. We list two weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages. We do not mention on this page remakes of sites that are already in our listings.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed at Anglicans Online, please use this form to tell us about it.

Advent Conspiracy. 'Worship fully. Spend less. Give more. Love all.' Highly recommended.

Beliefnet Interactive Advent Calendar. There is still time to make good use of this worthwhile online Advent calendar.

Praying Advent. 'We often miss Advent's power because these December weeks are full of secular Christmas parties and preparations for Christmas. Each year, the busyness of this season serves to distract us from having an Advent season that truly prepares us for the celebration of Christmas, with all its meaning. This site offers simple ways to enter into this Advent season, week by week, in the midst of our everyday lives.' From Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

Worth Noting
Does Charlotte Temple rest in peace? 'Tucked inside the graveyard of Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan, it is a weathered brownstone slab about the size of a refrigerator. Carved across it in inch-tall letters is the name Charlotte Temple. At first glance, it seems like any tribute to the deceased. But Ms. Temple appears to have been make-believe.' C. J. Hughes writes in the New York Times.

Just Thinking: From time to time our friends at Thinking Anglicans write reflective pieces. Several essays posted under this category during Advent have been especially thought-provoking.

Liturgical Influences of Anglo-Catholicism on The Waste Land and Other Works by T. S. Eliot: This Ph.D. dissertation written by A. Lee Fjordbotten in 1999 is now available online.

Which Jesus? Simon Barrow writes for Ekklesia. 'This is the specific challenge of Advent. Who is the Jesus who we hope will be born in our hearts and in our world? What can be achieved through him? And how shall we respond, personally and collectively, in this time and place?'

The 1892 BCP of the US Episcopal Church was translated into many Native American languages, among them Cheyenne, now spoken in Montana and Oklahoma. American Friends of St Davids Cathedral. 'For reasons as diverse as the persons drawn to St Davids [...] we desire a symbol of our affiliation with the Cathedral: its history, its role in the public ceremony and conscience of Wales, its presentation of art and architecture and its ongoing commitment to excellence in both choral and organ music, and its ministry and outreach'

Worth Noting
Archiepiscopal Enigma: 'I strongly suspect that Dr Williams finds a biography even more painful than having his portrait painted. A new portrait by Victoria Russell hangs in the privacy of his dining-room at Lambeth. His biography will bulk out many an inquisitive Christmas stocking.' Christopher Howse writes in the Telegraph (London).

Can religion help us through the slump?: The Guardian (London) asked five columnists this question. Their answers are here in the Comment is free section.

The Margaret Parker Memorial Lecture and Webcast: 'What are the keys to peace and justice through the empowerment of women, especially amid the challenges of the current global financial context?' Katharine Jefferts Schori inaugurates the Diocese of Los Angeles (US) new lecture series. The Presiding Bishop is introduced by one of Parker's sons, Richard, an economist and Harvard lecturer. Available as an on-demand streamed video webcast.
