What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks' worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site, and it can also search all of the sites that we link to.

Exchanges
AUS-->UK or USA: Sydney, Australia rector would like exchange in UK or States.
Anglican priest wants swap of rectory in June/July. St Luke's Enmore in the Diocese of Sydney is an Anglo-Catholic Parish of around 150 members, with an average of 80 at Mass at 9.30am each Sunday and 15 at Mass each Wednesday at 10am. Sydney can be cool in winter, 6 degrees C minimum (rarely) to around 20 in the day. Usually plenty of sun. We are an inner city parish: 15 minutes to the city by train and 30 minutes by bus (every 10 minutes). Sydney is a beautiful city: there is much to do in this cosmopolitan city--operas, symphony concerts, plays, all the latest films, art galleries, museums etc. We are 2.5 hour drive from the capital, Canberra, which is very cold in winter, often freezing at night, but seldom any snow. For more on the parish visit http://www.users.bigpond.com/stlukeenmore/st_lukes.htm. If you're interested, email the rector, the Reverend Mike Nixon: stlukeenmore@bigpond.com

USA-->UK: Long Island, New York rector seeks exchange in London.
'I am interested in a summer exchange (July, or mid-June through mid-July) in or around London. I live on Long Island's South Shore, a 35-minute train ride to midtown Manhattan. The rectory, in a lovely, affluent suburb that is noted for its variety and quality of restaurants, has five bedrooms, beautiful grounds, central air conditioning. Car and garage available. Close to beaches. Liturgical duties would consist of one sung Sunday Eucharist. The parish is considered within the catholic tradition. I did an exchange last summer in the Diocese of Southwark, and made some wonderful, lasting friendships. If you are interested, please contact jpd_t@hotmail.com. For further information about the parish, see: http://www.ascension-rvc.org'

Worth Noting
'In harmony with heaven and earth': a book review in The Independent (London) of the new book Rocks of Ages: science and religion in the fullness of life by Stephen Jay Gould. 'It has become customary to regard science and religion as not only diametrically opposed but actually at war. They cannot, it is assumed, coexist; one must triumph and destroy the other. In a religious country such as the United States, scientists and the religious are still locked in mortal combat. In Britain, a more secularised country, the battle is thought to have been won.' -- http://www.independent.co.uk/enjoyment/Books/Reviews/2001-02/gould030201.shtml (Note: This was published in December 1998 in the States.)

Exchanges
USA-->UK: Lewes, Delaware organist wants swap in England.
'Organist and Choirmaster is interested in doing an organist exchange, preferably in, or near, London for the month of July 2002. The church, St Peter's Episcopal Church, is located in Lewes, Delaware, which is situated on the Delaware Bay by the Atlantic ocean. It is near to many points of interest in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Washington. Will swap our three bedroom air conditioned house and our automobiles. If you are interested, please contact George Bayley at GBayley470@aol.com'

USA-->EUROPE: San Francisco, California rector wants exchange in Europe.
'We have a flat with a panoramic view in San Francisco, California. Well appointed living room, dining room, large bedroom, study could serve as extra bedroom. Dishwasher, washer and dryer, modern kitchen, fridge, gas stove. Carpeting, antiques, paintings, and photography add warmth and charm. Two cars and garage are also available. Across the street is beautiful, green Dolores Park, with walks, play ground, tennis court and soccer field. Streetcar to downtown San Francisco in fifteen minutes. Within walking distance of the flat are many fine restaurants.
I am Rector of Trinity Church and have a four-week vacation. Ann and I would like a four-week exchange between June 15 and August 5, with a rector or vicar’s home preferably in a city on the continent. The countryside in Italy or France would be fine, too. We would also be interested in an exchange in or near London. We made exchanges in the recent past with St James’s, Piccadilly, and Grovesnor Chapel, Mayfair. I would like to do services during the exchange. If the exchange partner would like to preach and/or celebrate at Trinity, that can be arranged but is not necessary. I have an associate and a number of clergy volunteers to take my place while I am on vacation. References upon request'. Please email more information: twocromeys@earthlink.net

Music
The 100th anniversary of the death of Sir John Stainer, March 2001: Sir John is best known as a composer of religious music (his work 'Crucifixion' remains popular), as professor of music at Oxford University and as organist of St Paul's Cathedral. London. His most popular works were published by Novello in London and included manuals on organs, composing, choral singing and harmony. These works, first published between 1871 and and 1878 had sold over 300,000 copies within and without the United Kingdom by Sir John's death in March 1901; they remained in print until the mid-20th century. Novello also published Stainer's more scholarly works, most notably his work on Early English music in the Bodleian Library, Oxford ('Early Bodleian Music', 1901). There is a special website providing a biography of Stainer, assessing his legacy and listing commemorative events taking place in Oxford, UK. -- http://members.tripod.co.uk/johnstainer
