Hallo again to all.
As we went to press we were getting a stream of email from people asking 'So what
happened with the AMiA consecrations in Denver, Colorado?' We've linked various newspaper stories in the News Centre, but, upon reflection,
we believe that the answer to that question must be: 'We aren't sure. Let's wait 20 years and see.'
In this era of live webcasts, reality television, protests, sound bites, and spin doctoring, it's easy to lose sight of what is really
going on (anywhere in the world, but we'll stay with Denver for the moment). Some men were consecrated as bishops. People disagree about what
is best for the church, about the right direction and goal for this corner of the Christian world we call the Anglican Communion. We may never
know whether it was 'good' or 'right' or 'bad' or 'wrong'. We might not know for a generation what effect it has on our lives as Christians,
as Anglicans, as the Body of Christ. Through the centuries there have been other eruptions, other protests, other changes. The church lives on, not because the right group of
people 'won' or 'lost', but because we, the faithful, kept our faith, said our prayers, and taught our beliefs to our children. What if we
stopped paying so much attention to a mere event, however politicised and publicised, and instead focussed on what it means for each of us
to be a good Anglican, a good Christian? Despite our entreaty, we're realists. We know that this event will likely generate all manner of
news reports this week. If we find them of immediate concern, we may publish a midweek edition of the News Centre, as we did this past week.
Check back as you're able. Turning to a less controversial topic, we're delighted that long-time Anglicans Online columnist Pierre Whalon was elected Bishop Suffragan
and Bishop in Charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe yesterday. Pierre is
still off in Paris and we have not heard from him ourselves, but we've already started looking for a pair of gaiters
as a present to him from Anglicans Online. We trust that he'll not be too busy to write for us after this elevation. Pierre, if you're reading
this, hearty congratulations! We welcome this week new parishes in France, England, Canada, and the States. With the start of summer in the northern hemisphere we should
like to remind you of our Professional Exchanges section. Finally, we were delighted to learn that
the Anglican Church of Canada will offer its upcoming General Synod live on the web. This means we
shan't need to plan for Anglicans Online daily coverage, as we did for Lambeth 1998 and ECUSA's 2000 General Convention. It was a lot of work
and we need our sleep. (It makes us better Anglicans.) Keep the faith. See you next week.
