Reviews The Smile of a Ghost, by Phil Rickman, reviewed in the Church Times by Jonathan Boardman. A novel, the story focuses on a series of spooky deaths in and around Ludlow Castle, and whether they might be related to the presence in the town of a rock singer who has made her name as a morbid "Gothic" heroine in a cult music scene. Coming In: Gays and Lesbians Reclaiming the Spiritual Journey, by Urs Mattmann, reviewed by Bishop Derek Rawcliffe in the Church Times. 'The book is a real attempt to do what the subtitle says: to reclaim the spiritual journey for gays and lesbians.' Confronted by God: The Essential Verna Dozier, edited by Cynthia L. Shattuck and Fredrica Harris Thompsett, reviewed in The Lutheran by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat. Verna Dozier was an 'advocate for an increased role for laity in Christian congregations. "There are no second-class citizens in the household of God," she wrote.' Canada Church

Resources Sermons for a Good Cause: Episcopal Relief and Development sponsors this new website of sermons that 'can be used as a homily, bulletin insert, or meditation. They are perfect for the cover of a service leaflet, in a newsletter, or on a parish Web site. The series is written by the Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, a priest, accomplished writer, director, producer and commentator who writes "The Almost-Daily EMos" on her website, geraniumfarm.org.' Sermons that Work: 'The sermons will be available online in advance of use dates, published as a resource for preachers and congregations and offering yet another way to experience the rainbow of diversity that is the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. These sermons are in the public domain, but we ask that attribution be given to the authors.' Support

Noting Validity is Everything. Should it be?: Steven R. Ford writes in The Living Church (Milwaukee) about validity as a consuming interest in parts of the Anglican world. 'We, as Anglicans, have a deep and rightful commitment to the historic episcopate. Yet we willingly divide ourselves according to which particular line we consider to be "valid." Where will it ever end?' |

Reviews Open for You: The Church, the Visitor and the Gospel, by Paul Bond, reviewed by Victor Stock in the Church Times. 'What is obvious to the churchgoer is not obvious to the visitor.' Why do we show off our edifices without relating what they mean to and for our faith? The Good Parish Management Guide: How to Revive Your Parish, by Ian Smith, reviewed by John Kiddle in the Church Times. 'It's a short book (150 pages)... offering tools to enable you to take an honest look at your parish. [Smith is] able only to scratch the surface; and yet his scratch is intelligent and helpful.'
