What's New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We list two (sometimes three) weeks’ worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, you can look in our archives or try the AO search engine. It searches our entire site and also many important official Anglican sites worldwide. If you still can't find it, please let us know.

If you would like your website listed here, please use this form to tell us about it.

Week of 15 October 2006

Book Reviews
Benjamin Britten: The Spiritual Dimension, by Graham Elliott, reviewed in the Church Times by Helen Burrows. Elliott 'explores the dichotomy between Britten's much documented agnosticism and the influence of the sacred in so much of his music'.

The Pursuit of Happiness: A History from the Greeks to the Present, by Darrin McMahon, reviewed in the Church Times by Mark Vernon. 'Starting with Socrates and ending with science, it pursues the idea, both in the sense of tracking down the history of the concept (along with the lives and times of those who have shaped it), and in the sense of seeking its elusive goal.'

'The Tasks of Philosophy: Selected Essays, Volume 1 and Ethics and Politics, Volume 2, by Alasdair MacIntyre, reviewed in the Church Times by John Macquarrie. 'The first volume deals with basic questions in the philosophy of religion and theology. [In Volume 2] there are interesting chapters on Kant, Mill, Burke, and others, but the one that most impressed this reviewer was on Marxism — a chapter written as a kind of journal of the author's thinking between 1953 and 1995.'

Book Reviews
The Order of Things: Explorations in Scientific Theology, by Alister E. McGrath, reviewed in the Church Times by John Polkinghorne. 'A book more for the specialist interested in the detail of how McGrath's abundant writing projects are developing, than for the general reader with an interest in science and religion.'

Palgrave Advances in the European Reformations, edited by Alec Ryrie, is reviewed with Moderate Voices in the European Reformation, edited by Luc Racaut and Alec Ryrie, by Euan Cameron in the Church Times. 'Palgrave Advances in the European Reformations offers a series of historiographical essays on different aspects of the Reformation... Moderate Voices more subtly identifies those who were clear about their beliefs but were less radically exclusive.'

Pascal's Fire: Scientific Faith and Religious Understanding, by Keith Ward, reviewed in the Church Times by John Habgood. 'Science itself, says Ward, is possible only on the basis of faith in the ultimate intelligibility of the universe; and there are realities inaccessible to science which only religious experience can disclose.'

Church History
A Letter to the Laity of the Diocese of Natal, by John William Colenso (1864). In this long open letter following his deposition in December 1863, Colenso defends his religious opinions and right to remain as diocesan bishop in what is now South Africa.

South Sea Island Labour Traffic, by John Coleridge Patteson (1871). Bishop Patteson writes this memorandum to the General Synod of the Church of England in New Zealand, in which he argues that the traffic in labourers in the South Pacific parallels the former traffic in African slaves.

The Southern Cross and Southern Crown; Or, the Gospel in New Zealand, by Sarah Tucker (1866). This long account of the first fifty years of Anglican life in New Zealand is by prolific author and mission chronicler Sarah Tucker (1821-1893). A series of striking engravings begins the narrative.

Worth Noting

Drive for multi-faith Britain deepens rifts, says Church: In the Telegraph, Jonathan Wynne-Jones writes that 'The Church of England has launched an astonishing attack on the Government's drive to turn Britain into a multi-faith society'.

'In 20 years, there will be no more Christians in Iraq': In The Guardian, Mark Lattimer wonders why the coalition forces haven't done more to protect them.

Laureate Tutu Remains Tireless Advocate: The New York Times reports on Archbishop Tutu's 75th birthday party.

Terry Waite joins Quakers to escape ‘chirpy’ vicars: In the Sunday Times, Christopher Morgan talks with one of the 'world's best known Anglicans' about his reasons for attending the Friends' Meeting House instead of his local parish church.

Time and Gravity Take a Toll on St. Bartholomew's Church: Christopher Gray, in the New York Times, counts the loss.

Vicar under fire from equality chief after racist joke and comments about 'damage' of multiculturalism: Steven Morris reports in The Guardian.

A columbarium of Episcopal-search websites: A few weeks ago Anglicans Online asked: 'Where do bishop-search websites go after the elections are complete?' Douglas LeBlanc solves the mystery.

'I have found that some dioceses, such as New Hampshire, link to archive pages that offer the profile information on the elected bishop, along with the diocesan profile from the time. (Most profiles of unelected nominees do seem to fade into the ether.) I found archives for New Jersey and Oregon through Google. Louie Crew's Episcopal Elections and Retirements page sometimes leads to pages that still list nominees, such as those for Nebraska and Western Louisiana. Louie maintains this wonderful page that helps election geeks like remember me who has run — where, when, and how many times. Bishop Clay Matthews of the Episcopal Office of Pastoral Development has said he urges search committees to leave their websites in place for a time after an election, rather than taking them down immediately, to preserve the dignity of unelected nominees. Episcopal News Service did this in the case of the Presiding Bishop's election. The overall lesson is clear, though: If you find an especially thoughtful or quirky profile of a nominee, it's best to save a copy on your hard drive'.

Douglas LeBlanc, Virginia
