Short reviews Ryan Smith's Gothic Arches,
Latin Crosses: Anti-Catholicism and American
Church Designs in the Nineteenth Century in Books
and Culture. 'When American Protestants first
broke with decades of pious iconoclasm in the
1840s and began adopting the crosses, candles,
choir vestments, sanctuary flowers, stained glass
windows, and Gothic architecture of Roman Catholics,
a sea-change took place in American religion.'

A
Narrative of Certain Circumstances
Which Took Place at St. Paul's
Church, Yorkville (1856).
This documentary narrative of
a little-known ritualist controversy
in the Diocese of Toronto focuses
on the usual suspects: Puseyism,
Popery and a brand new altar.
Mormonism
and England: A Sermon, by Christopher Wordsworth
(1867). The prolific author Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885)
was Bishop of London from 1869 to 1885. In this sermon
on Mormonism, he warns that the
'difficulty which has arisen in America may one day arise
in England'.

Sacred
Mysteries: Christopher Howse writes in
the Telegraph (London) on Candlemas. 'For
the past 1,000 years or so, in the yearly
memorial of that meeting in the Temple, Christ
as the light has been symbolised by lighted
candles carried by parishioners in procession.
That's why the day, next Friday, February
2, is known as Candlemas.' |
