New This Week

ALL THE NEW URLS we receive each week are here. We post two weeks' worth, cycling the old ones off each week. As they disappear from this page, you'll find the links moved to their natural home categories in our resource pages.

If you can't find something that was once here, try our search engine. It searches our entire site, and it can also search all of the sites that we link to.

Church history
What happens when a church disappears? 'The Old Elk Run (Anglican) Church is a property in ruins; that is, it is an historical site, but there is no building. Old Elk Run Church was the first Anglican Church in Fauquier County, Virginia and former Chief Justice John Marshall was a descendent of the first Rector'. -- http://www.mnsinc.com/jhammond/final2.htm

Essays
'Don't call me Mrs: When the local Catholics couldn't face my surname, I went church shopping'. Donna Cornachio writes about becoming Episcopalian in Salon: 'I am taking classes to learn how to be an Episcopalian and I'm primed for the usual jokes: that I'll start taking the crust off my white bread ...' -- http://salon.com/mwt/feature/2000/02/23/faith/index.html

The Right Reverend Paul Marshall, Bishop of the Diocese of Bethlehem (fourteen counties in eastern and northeastern Pennsylania, USA), has been writing a monthly column for local daily newspapers for three years. Eight now feature it; the papers have a combined circulation of 500,000. The bishops writes in his February article that Christianity no longer possesses the moral right to proselytize Jews.-- http://www.diobeth.org/secular-columns4.html

Events
Prayer for Primates Meeting in March (Prayer begins Monday, 28 February)
Beginning Monday, 28 February, a prayer vigil begins. From the organizers: 'Our hope and prayer is that there will be prayer coverage every hour between tomorrow (28 February) and the ending of the Primates meeting--about 400 hours of prayer if people pray in one-hour increments. The prayers ... will contribute to lessening the tension in our beloved church and will empower the Primates in Portugal to "be still" and listen with their hearts to one another, listen to the Spirit within, and listen to the Voice beneath the voices.
'The email address to let us know when you would be willing to pray is prayer@anglicanvigils.org. When people email their names, the date(s) and time(s) they will pray (and if they wish, their location), we will add their names to a prayer vigil calendar. The calendar can be accessed through the Anglican Vigils web site (http://www.anglicanvigils.org), the Lundi-Lambeth web site (http://maffin.net/june/lundi1.htm), or directly: http://www.calendars.net/cals/angvigil.

'Lundi-Lambeth' and 'Anglican Vigils' have no agenda, no desire to sway theological perspectives, no inclination to do anything except bring before God, these men of God who, in response to God's call, now serve the Anglican Communion as Primates'. For more information email June Maffin (June@maffin.net) or Pam Phillips (webpsalms@iname.com).
